SUPPLEMENTARY HISTORY

The history of the Brown family is an interesting one. Once from Europe, the original head of the family, known as Pascal, rebelled against his family's traditions and moved to New York to make his fortunes there. He changed his name from Pascal C. to Gordon Brown since he wanted a fresh chance in life. He later on married a beautiful woman named Rosaline and had three children: Chester Brown, Lorraine Brown (later Grace after she married her husband), and Henry Brown. For Matthew's history, he was from the branch of Henry Brown. Henry opted to move to England in hopes of making something of himself there and met a stunning woman by the name of Florence. He married her and they later on went to open the family pub in Haringey: The Watering Hole. The Watering Hole was the hub point, so to speak, for the family's brushes with the supernatural. Most of them were minor, their patrons being werewolves or vampires looking for a drink, and didn't change much of their lives significantly. The only crucial event they ever had in the past is when a powerful fae, Govannon, blessed the pub to be a neutral ground from the supernatural after falling for one of Brown women, a young woman by the name of Charlotte Eloise Brown, and deciding that her family's livelihood must be protected to ensure her prosperity and her eventual marriage to him. Fae logic. (He never did get her to be his bride but he remained a faithful patron of the bar until retreating back to the Other Realm upon her early death from a fatal illness.) Decades later Matthew 'Mattie' Brown would be born to his parents, Richards Jerry Brown and Jennifer Aoife Hanlon-Brown. He's their oldest child and he's also the big brother to Adalinda Calista Brown who is seven years younger than him. He didn’t have the easiest time growing up. Born to a couple struggling to pay the bills and keep the family business from closing down, he learned it was a dog-eat-dog world if you weren’t careful and he learned to fight back if he had to and to keep his head down if he didn’t want Momsy to worry about him coming back sporting a shiner. His teenager years were Matthew being a terror in the neighborhood, stealing things and picking locks of people's bikes or even houses to steal their things. There were a lot of brushes with the law in this time, barely escaping serving jail time since Matthew was adventurous and bored and an asshole but he wasn't reckless. His behaviour reached a critical point when he was around sixteen or so after he briefly rolled with a gang too when the charismatic leader took a shining to him. He started to get into serious things, stealing stuff and smuggling things and all the nasty crimes that could throw him in prison, not jail, if he's caught redhanded. His parents managed to stop him from going down that path any further by making him wake him up to reality and grow up, get a job, and buckle down. It wasn't easy thanks to his stubborn nature back then but his parents refused to give up on him and, slowly but surely, he woke up to the reality the leader of the gang didn't really care for him and would throw him to the wolves if he could. Good timing too since a year after he broke away from the gang and took his duties more seriously, parents died when he was only eighteen-years-old. All thanks to a drunk driver and a rainy afternoon, he now had to shoulder responsibility for his education, his pub, and raising Addie who was just twelve-years-old at the time. Matthew tried his best to keep his head above waters and he succeeded over those dark times. The Watering Hole is still going on strong and Addie, having graduated from college with her masters, opted to leave for France to pursue a career in fashion. The siblings have a happy enough relationship with each other to keep in contact. In 2011 he fell in love when he wandered into a bar to get out of the rain one March evening and he heard a beautiful voice crooning about the hot heat of summer paling in comparison to the warmth of two bodies pressed up together. He turned to face the stage and saw the gorgeous woman with dark hair and eyes with skin pale as snow and with lips red as blood. After the show he approached her and she said her name was Lyra, Lyra Lore, and she was the most beautiful woman in the world in Matthew’s eyes. Effervescent, charming, and graceful – Matthew wonders what she saw in a shmuck like him to date him for more than a year after that night, let alone have her claim he’s the one she’s been with the longest in. Good things come to an end though. Matthew was grounded and was happy to work at the Watering Hole and check up on Addie’s misadventures while Lyra tried, time and again, to explore the world with her and leave everything behind. She was fun loving and adventurous while he was content to stay on his small slice of the world. Neither of them were going to budge on it and they started to fight, making snippy comments at each other or not enjoying spending as much time with the other like before. So on 2014, they agreed their time together was magical but they had to go their separate ways. No volcanic breakups, no screaming fights -- Nothing like that. Simply an agreement that their time is up for now. She did seem a little disappointed as he left her at her bar but he was sure she’d find someone else to replace by the end of the month. A woman like her always has an interested party knocking on her door the moment she’s free. |
